Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular destinations in the Riviera Maya, and getting there from Cancun Airport is simple: the whole route follows Federal Highway 307 heading south. This guide compares your options so you can choose by group size, luggage and budget.

The options side by side

Option Approximate time Drops you at Best for
Private transfer 40 minutes Your hotel door Families, groups, late arrivals
ADO bus Longer: add waiting time and the ride from the station The bus station Solo travelers with light luggage
Tren Maya About 50 minutes by train, plus rides to and from the stations The station, outside downtown Morning arrivals traveling light
Airport taxi Similar to private Your hotel Anyone who didn't book ahead
Rental car Similar to private Wherever you choose Anyone planning to explore the region

Times depend on traffic and time of day.

Private transfer

The most direct way: you book before you travel, the driver meets you at arrivals and you ride with no stops to your hotel. The price is per vehicle, so for families and groups it often balances out against buying several tickets.

ADO bus

ADO buses leave from the airport terminals for Playa del Carmen and are the cheapest option. According to ADO, they leave every 20 to 40 minutes and the ride takes 1 h 30 to 1 h 50. Keep in mind they run on fixed schedules and drop you at the Playa bus station, so you'll need a taxi or a walk to your hotel. It works if you travel light and your hotel is close to the station.

Tren Maya

The Tren Maya links the Cancun Airport station with Playa del Carmen in about 50 minutes. The route reopened in August 2026 after months of works, with very few departures a day and only in the morning, so it rarely lines up with a flight arrival. The Playa del Carmen station is also outside downtown: you will need a ride to your hotel.

  • Getting to the station: the Cancun Airport station is across the highway; buses run from Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Check the schedule and cost when you arrive.
  • Luggage: you load and unload it yourself, with a limit on pieces and weight.
  • Schedules: they change and departures are few; check them on the official Tren Maya website before planning around it.

Airport taxi

Arranged at the terminal when you arrive, with no booking needed. It runs on airport rates; ask for the fare before you get in.

Rental car

If you plan to visit cenotes, Tulum or other spots in the Riviera Maya, a rental car gives you freedom. Factor in hotel parking and that traffic and parking can get tricky in downtown Playa del Carmen.

Tips for arriving in Playa del Carmen

  • Have your hotel's exact address handy. Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida) is pedestrian along its main stretch, so the vehicle drops you on the street closest to your hotel.
  • Book at least 24 hours in advance to make sure a vehicle is available.
  • Each passenger can bring one standard suitcase and one carry-on. If you have extra or oversized luggage, mention it when you book.
  • If you're also visiting Tulum, read our guide from Cancun Airport to Tulum.

How long it takes depending on when you land

The 40 minutes assume normal traffic. Federal Highway 307 is a fast road, but at certain times the ride takes longer:

  • Early morning and at night: usually the smoothest time, close to the reference time.
  • Afternoons and high-season weekends: more cars at the entrance to Playa del Carmen can make the ride longer.
  • When several flights land at once: immigration and customs can take a while; remember your driver waits up to 60 minutes after your flight lands.

If you have an activity or a check-in at a set time, leave a generous buffer instead of planning around the exact travel time.

Traveling with kids or bulky luggage

When you book, tell us how many passengers are traveling, including children, and whether you're bringing a stroller, a surfboard or golf clubs. With that information we assign a vehicle with enough room for your whole group and its luggage, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
