Getting there

How to get from Cancun Airport to Puerto Morelos

Getting from Cancun Airport to Puerto Morelos takes about 25 minutes by private transfer, heading south on Federal Highway 307. The bus drops you on the highway, far from the beach; the most comfortable option is a private transfer that takes you to your hotel.

Puerto Morelos is a laid-back fishing town between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, known for its reef, its pier and its leaning lighthouse. It's one of the closest destinations to Cancun Airport and also one of the most confusing on arrival: the town, the resorts and the residential areas are split by the highway. This guide explains how to get from Cancun Airport to Puerto Morelos depending on where you're staying.

Times depend on traffic and the area of Puerto Morelos you're heading to.

Private transfer

Since the ride is short, a private transfer is the simplest way to start your vacation: your driver is already waiting, you load your bags once and go straight to your hotel entrance, even if it sits on an access road far from the highway. The price is per vehicle and fixed when you book.

Bus and Tren Maya

There's no direct, frequent way to reach Puerto Morelos from the airport by public transportation. ADO buses from the airport go to places like the Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen or Tulum; if you want to use them, check on the ADO website whether any departure stops in Puerto Morelos that day.

The Tren Maya has a Puerto Morelos station on the line between Cancun Airport and Playa del Carmen, but with very few departures a day. You reach the airport station by bus from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and from the Puerto Morelos station you'll need a ride to where you're staying. Check current schedules on the official website before planning around it.

Airport taxi

Arranged at the terminal when you arrive, with no booking needed, and priced at airport rates. Ask for the total fare before you get in and confirm it covers your whole group and its luggage.

Rental car

Puerto Morelos is a good base for the Ruta de los Cenotes, which starts right at the junction and heads inland, and for day trips to Playa del Carmen. If you'll move around a lot, a rental car gives you freedom; parking near the beach in town is limited.

Know which area of Puerto Morelos you're going to

  • The town (coastal area): around the main square, the pier and the leaning lighthouse, with restaurants, small hotels and vacation rentals.
  • The resort strip: all-inclusive hotels along the coast, north and south of town, each with its own access road from the highway.
  • The inland side: across Highway 307, where many locals live and where you'll find apartments and houses for rent.

Always give the name and exact address when you book: several resorts share an access road and some rentals have no visible sign.

How long it takes depending on when you land

  • Early morning and at night: the highway usually flows well and the ride is close to the reference time.
  • Afternoons and high season: there's more traffic leaving Cancun and the ride can take longer.
  • When several flights land at once: immigration and customs can take a while; your driver waits up to 60 minutes after your flight lands.

Traveling with kids or bulky luggage

When you book, tell us how many passengers are traveling, including children, and whether you're bringing a stroller, a surfboard or golf clubs. With that information we assign a vehicle with enough room for your whole group and its luggage, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
